UPDATED COMPUTER MANAGERS

On this page are links to updated computer managers (CMs) for the Strat-O-Matic computer football game.  CMs determine the formations, personnel, and play-calling for computer-controlled teams on each play.  Each and every stock team in each season has its own customized CM. In addition, below is a link to a somewhat detailed solitaire play-calling set of charts for cards-and-dice play.

As detailed in this forum thread – Updated Computer Managers – the CMs which I created years ago for many of the seasons 1983-2008 were created using an older template and process, and could use some improvement.  On this page are links to updated CMs using current processes and are significantly improved due to this.  The improvements may not be noticed on a large-scale level but each team’s customization is in much more detail compared to the original CMs released with these seasons and the play-calling makes more sense (not necessarily more competitive, but makes fewer errors).

Here are procedures which you may go through to apply these new CMs to your Strat football game:

1) Click on the link below to download the zip file (for example, file NFLed1985CMs.zip) to any location on your PC’s hard drive, such as your Desktop

2) Navigate to the file’s location and double-click on it to show all of its files (approximately 28-38 files within each season’s zip file)

3) Copy the 3 files which have the extension def – for example, 1985oplyrd.def, 1985plyr.def, and 1985team.def – into the Data sub-folder within the Strat-O-Matic Football folder; when it asks if you want to over-write the 3 files answer yes

4) Copy all of the mgr files (for example, NFLed_1985DAL_O.mgr) into the Managers sub-folder within the Strat-O-Matic Football folder; when it asks if you want to over-write the 2 or 3 dozen files answer yes

5) You may delete the zip file if you want to (optional)

6) Create a new stock league for that season, all of the new CM settings will be applied for the new league

7) If you want to play a non-league game with the new managers, and if you have previously played any non-league games with any teams in that season, then once steps 1-5 above are completed go through the following procedures:

        a) Navigate to the Leagues sub-folder within the Strat-O-Matic Football folder on your PC’s hard drive

        b) Double-click to open the Local sub-folder, then double-click to open the Teams sub-folder

        c) Within the Teams sub-folder delete all files beginning with the season you have updated; for example, delete files 19850018.team and 19850024.team

        d) If you do not see within the Teams sub-folder any files to delete which have the season you have updated, then that is no problem and you are all set

Seasons with updated CMs:

* 1984 has been updated automatically with v2019 of Strat football – if you own v2019, then there is nothing you need to do other than steps #6 and #7 above

* 1989 updated March 14, 2020 – NFLed1989CMs.zip – these CMs were included in v2020 and later versions of the game

* 1998 updated August 25, 2019 – NFLed1998CMs.zip – these CMs were included in v2020 and later versions of the game

* 1985 updated August 16, 2022 – NFLed1985CMs.zip

* 1999 updated September 5, 2022 – NFLed1999CMs.zip

* 1983 updated October 9, 2022 – NFLed1983CMs.zip

* 1986 updated November 19, 2022 – NFLed1986CMs.zip

* 1992 updated January 14, 2023 – NFLed1992CMs.zip
