NFLed's 2001 Strat-O-Matic
Computer Football Web Page
Welcome. The purpose of this page is to post my
computer managers and
2000 season replay thoughts for the
great Strat-O-Matic (SOM) computer
football game
which can be seen at http://www.strat-o-matic.com.
Please check out http://www.somworld.com for great coverage
on all
SOM games.
MOST RECENT UPDATES (see far below for
update histories):
managers with
much more situational play-calling based upon time remaining, score,
field position,
and defensive set (I strongly recommend this update for those who
are not playing
2000 season teams; I have not updated the passing offense); the
current running
offense has about 10% more running plays for almost every situation
than the
balanced offense, if you would like to create a passing offense I recommend
modifying the
balanced offense instead of using the passing offense currently on the
web page
although the passing offense on the web page is still okay; I have also
added a
"4-3 run defense" which has significantly more "run
defense" calls and
otherwise uses
the same template as the 4-3 base defense
manager, made
huge changes to the 3-4 defense (to add the enhancements I had been
making to the
4-3 defensive manager), and added the 4-3 blitzing defensive manager
(with huge
amounts of "show blitz" to be used by teams with good pass rushing
defensive
linemen); I have made each of these managers much more versatile for those
who like to
adjust things (myself included) so that changes can be made to all three
simultaneously
Note -- I will almost certainly not be
including the recent enhancements (see history
far below) of the
offenses and defenses into the 2000 season team managers but I will
include the
enhancements in the 2001 season team managers when they are released; I
may or may not
create a 3-4 blitzing defensive manager
OFFENSIVE MANAGER (Balanced) (updated
4/27)
OFFENSIVE MANAGER (More Passing) (updated
2/16, see note above)
OFFENSIVE MANAGER (More Running) (updated
4/27)
4-3 BASE DEFENSIVE MANAGER (updated 4/27)
4-3 BLITZ DEFENSIVE MANAGER (Lots of
"show blitz")
(updated 4/27)
4-3 RUN DEFENSIVE
MANAGER (More "run" defense)
(updated 4/27)
3-4 BASE DEFENSIVE MANAGER (updated 4/16)
All of the 7 above managers are zipped
into the following file:
To install these simply download them
into your Strat-O-Matic Football
\managers directory and then import them
into each team you want to
be using them:
For a non-league team start a game and
then click on View and click on
View Manager, then click on the
Offensive Plays tab and click on
Import, choose the NFLED_O_O manager and
click Ok; next click on
Defensive Plays, click on Import, choose
the NFLED_D43_D43 manager
and click
Ok. The managers will then be
loaded for all non-league
games you play
with this team. If you want this
team to be in a
league using
these managers then you will need to import them once
the league has
been created (see next paragraph).
For a team which is in a league (for
example, a 2000 season replay
league) go into
the league manager, highlight the team which you
want to be
using these managers, click on Team, click on Edit Rosters,
click on the
View Depth Chart tab and then proceed to import the
managers the
same as in the previous paragraph above.
Once you do
this then this
team will use these managers the entire season unless
you modify it
or import another manager.
If you notice any major problems with it
feel free to post your
comments at the
www.somworld.com forums.
The following are offensive managers
designed for each individual 2000
season team
using the standard offensive manager above as a base.
I indicate below the approximate
percentage of plays which were
passes for that
NFL team that season (the 2000 NFL average was
about 54.5%
which the standard offensive manager approximately
re-creates in
replays).
These offensive managers include rotating
backup RB's and receivers
so you should
get realistic results without having to use the "player
overusage"
or injuries options.
Below are also defensive managers
designed for each individual 2000
season
team. These managers will
doubleteam a bit more to cover for
weak defenders
and cover up the weakest flat zone a bit more. To be
honest the
generic defensive managers above are tougher opponents
because I have
enhanced them since making these 2000 season managers
(especially in
passing situations) but these are still fairly good.
2000 SEASON OFFENSIVE MANAGERS
2000 SEASON DEFENSIVE MANAGERS
All 62 of the above managers are in the
following zip file:
Each of the managers are all zipped into
one file for about a 200kb
(offenses) and
450kb (defenses) download.
Note: be careful importing 2000 OAK offense, make sure that you don't accidentally
import the 2000
OAK 4-3 defense into the offensive manager; if you found that you
have done that
then just import the offense
The following are the % of plays which
were passes for these teams:

DEN -- 53% 2000

WEB PAGE HISTORY
introduced
yesterday
in appropriate
situations (2nd and 8-11, for example)*
(big change for
the positive, in my view) and added a few more field position and vs
offensive set
situations (for example, blitzing when opponent is at their own 1-8 yard
line)*
* = I will probably not be updating the
2000 season defensive managers with the above
changes but
will include them in the 2001 season managers
the 2000 season
offensive managers of KC, CLE, and DEN to reflect this, also modified
for each of
these teams if you have already started a league
managers based
upon long field goal capability (not an important update here)
designed to be as
challenging as possible with 1) adjustments to cover weak defenders
in zones
(mostly flat zones), 2) modifications to doubleteams for weak defenders, 3)
slight
adjustment to run/pass calls based upon team strength, 4) return kicks from end
zone based upon
returners strength and 5) plenty of show blitz for teams with good
pass rush
I had made to the 4-3 defense
fixes and a few
team-specific adjustments (i.e. nothing major), files are dated 2/23 and
also 3/2 and 3/3;
also updated the 4-3 defense with some minor adjustments
I had made to the 2000 season offensive
managers (4th downs, for example) though without
the player-specific
enhancements, I have added generic offensive managers which pass
more and which
run more, feel free to use these managers for any team in the recent era
(or old era
teams if you want though they won't be realistic for old era teams); I have
also made slight
modifications to the 3-4 defense to make it more difficult for the
human opponent
to come back from a big deficit
these both with
the 4-3 defensive manager and the 2000 season offensive managers; other
than these
errors I believe that most everything is where it should be
substituting in
backup RB's, WR's, and TE's to reflect actual usage) and adjusted 2000
season replay
comments accordingly; now, for example, one can load these managers (and
the 4-3 and 3-4
defensive managers) and auto-replay an entire 2000 season and this will
almost fully
re-create 2000 season usage stats for all players except QB's which would
need to be
substituted manually (see 2000 season replay comments below)
considerations,
adjustments against non-standard sets, and generally better play-calling
modified 2000
DEN,
some 2000
season replay comments
down, also
updated 3-4 defense with more 3-4 defensive sets
4-3 was still used to 3-4)
3-4 defense
The following are my plans for replaying
the 2000 season with no
injuries and no
player overusage. The number before
a g indicates
the number of
games on the 16-game schedule that player should
appear at that
position.
Feel free to not substitute QB's if would rather the starting QB
get all of the
action.
