Updated 8/22/2010

Welcome to the SSFA!  The SSFA is a 24 team draft keeper league – each league member drafts individual players and keeps them from year to year – in which each team plays a 16-game schedule (plus potential playoffs) each year.  Games are played during the late winter and spring each year at a pace of 4 games per month.  If after viewing these web pages you have any questions please don’t hesitate to post on our League Message Board.

2009 Season Draft (as always on the first Saturday during the NFL playoffs when there is no playoff game scheduled) Order:  STL, HOU, DAL/JAX, IND/GB/NE/CHI/CAR, MIN/CLE/DET, MIA/NYJ, NYG/PHI/BUF, SEA, CIN/BAL, OAK, SF, SD, ARI   (for teams separated by a slash the order is reversed in even-numbered rounds).

**Host** of the game – please e-mail me the POST file and the html boxscore file as soon as the game ends.

Please set your game options to autosave after each play and either fastest animation or no animation; also, turn off scroll play-by-play text.

Everyone in the league needs to be familiar with the bulleted items in the league Constitution and please make sure that you know the game rules for such things as when show blitz, 3-3-5, and 4-2-5 are allowed and what RB’s are restricted.  Also, make sure that you set the game option to autosave after each play by going into the game, clicking on Game, clicking on Options, and clicking on Auto Save after Each Play to put a check mark there.  And please follow the other rules listed in the Constitution such as fastest animation (or no animation).  The annual rookie/free-agent draft is the first Saturday in January in which there is not an NFL playoff game.

Rule changes for the 2008 season:  1) Currently teams draft in reverse order of regular season finish (with the championship game participants drafting last), we will discuss for teams making the playoffs drafting in reverse order of how far a team went into the playoffs to potentially be implemented in the 2009 season cards (starting in calendar year 2011); this was voted down 6-5 on the forum so we will continue with the current rule; 2) currently during the draft a team must fill its PR and KR requirements by the end of round 8, this presents admin difficulties for the league so instead teams should be required to fill its PR and KR requirements by the end of the Supplemental Draft, if there is no player eligible to play the needed PR or KR position then the team must use a draft pick on “generic PR” or “generic KR” and the Commissioner will immediately after the Supplemental Draft assign a bad card to fill the slot for the current season, this was approved with no contrary comments with 5 comments in favor; 3) modifying the requirement for K to be drafted by the end of round 6 (instead of 5 as it is now) and P to be drafted by the end of round 8 (instead of 6 as it is now), this modification wouldn’t go into effect until the 2009 season cards (starting in calendar year 2011), this was approved with no contrary comments with 7 comments in favor; 4) let’s remove the 3 PR, 3 KR, 3 QB roster maximum until the 53-man cut date, currently it is not allowed to have more than 3 just before the draft but this will allow the draft to proceed more smoothly not having to worry about cutting anyone during the draft, this was approved with no contrary comments with 3 comments in favor; 5) currently a coach must announce before the first play from scrimmage whether a 50-99 carry RB is unlimited in the first half (and it defaults to the second half if there is no announcement), there is a proposal to require this announcement either ahead of time to be posted on the roster sheet or via e-mail with the other coach before kickoff; this was approved with no dissention, there was some discussion about different approaches but ultimately there was no dissention with this proposal.

2007 Season News:

  • December 27, 2008 – JT/DEN has indicated that he will not be continuing full-time participation in the league
  • December 29, 2008 – Mike/PIT is not responding to e-mails for several weeks, Neil neilshannon1@comcast.net has taken over team PIT
  • December 29, 2008 Trade disallowed – CIN receives RB Ladainian Tomlinson, ROLB 0-8 Kamerion Wimbley, and PHI #4; PHI receives CIN #1 (18th overall), NT 4-0 Aubrayo Franklin, and FS 4 Jarrad Page; this trade was called for a vote by Ed on 12/29 and on 12/31 the vote was resolved by the TRC 4-0 to disallow the deal with Wayne, Ed, Jay, and Paul voting to disallow; to summarize the TRC view, the other members of the trade (besides LT and the #1) were either around even or else Cin gained the better value but LT for the #18 pick of the draft is not anywhere remotely close to LT’s value in the consensus view of the TRC
  • December 31, 2008 Trade – NYJ receives C 5-4 Jeremy Newberry, CLE receives 2008 NYJ #5
  • January 2, 2009 – Neil has changed the team name from PIT to the Carolina Panthers (this does not count as Neil’s one career name change since Neil hasn’t yet played a game with this team)
  • January 2, 2009 Trade – CIN receives LE 6-3 Aaron Smith, MLB 5-0 London Fletcher, RG 5-4 Cooper Carlisle, and unrated Trevor Pryce; DEN receives CIN #3 and 2008 CIN #1; this trade was called for a TRC vote by Ed on 1/2 evening; on 1/5 evening the trade was resolved 2-1 in favor of allowing with Ed and Wayne voting to allow and Jay voting not to allow (Paul later voted to allow)
  • January 3, 2009 Trade – MIN receives HB Steven Jackson and RDT 5-3 John Henderson; JAX receives NT 5-1 Chris Hoke, MIN #2, and 2008 MIN #3; this trade was called for a TRC vote by Wayne on 1/4; on 1/6 evening this trade was resolved 2-2 with Gary and Ed voting to allow and Wayne and Paul voting to disallow so this trade does not receive the majority vote to disallow and is therefore allowed
  • January 4, 2009 Trade – IND received HB Brian Westbrook and ARI #1 (15th overall); ARI receives RLB 6-5 Lance Briggs and IND #1 (6th overall)
  • January 4, 2009 Trade – PHI receives RLB 6-0 Keith Bulluck and LDT 5-4 Warren Sapp; DEN receives 2008 PHI #1
  • January 5, 2009 Trade – MIA receives LCB 6 Champ Bailey, LG 5-7 Derrick Dockery, and LT 4-4 Marvel Smith; DEN receives MIA #1 (9th overall) and 2008 MIA #3
  • January 5, 2009 Trade – PHI receives LT 4-5 Levi Jones and JAX #5; JAX receives PHI #4 and 2008 PHI #5
  • January 5, 2009 Trade – OAK receives LCB 5 Ronde Barber and LLB 5-0 Hunter Hillenmeyer; DEN receives OAK #4
  • January 6, 2009 Trade reported – SEA receives QB Matt Schaub and CIN #5; CIN receives SS 0 Dawan Landry, HB Jerome Harrison, and SEA #1 (22nd overall); this trade was called for a TRC vote by Ed on 1/6 evening – 1/7 Note: according to Gary/CIN there was a misunderstanding and he thought that J.Harrison was James Harrison, Gary has asked Dennis/SEA for a re-working of the deal and that is being worked out
  • Comment from the Commissioner (for those following these transactions):  The TRC is not micro-managing or looking things over too closely.  Many of the deals made so far are not just medium or fringe players or even good players but many of them involve stars of the NFL and in several of the cases the deal at least initially appeared to be extremely far in one direction, a deal which simply benefits one team would be allowed but a deal which is severely and clearly one-sided (based upon the opinion of the majority of TRC members for the specific deal) is not allowed.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to let me know.
  • January 6, 2009 – Nathan has changed the team name from DEN to the St. Louis Rams (this does not count as Nathan’s one career name change since Nathan hasn’t yet played a game with this team)
  • January 7, 2009 – Paul/SD has found some errors in the rosters and these have been corrected, an e-mail to the league was sent (and posted on the message board) informing league members of these errors:  1) Ryan Boschetti DT 0-0 for WAS and Roy Manning LB 0-0 for CIN were not rated by Strat after all (they were likely rated during beta testing but not now) so they have been removed from the unowned players spreadsheet, 2) Travelle Wharton LT 4-4 for CAR and Andy McCollum for C/G 4-4 for STL were accidentally left off the unowned players spreadsheet but they have now been added; thank you Paul!
  • January 9, 2009 Trade – SEA receives QB Matt Schaub, SS 4 Rodney Harrison, and CIN #6; CIN receives RLB 6-12-2* Julian Peterson, SS 0 Dawan Landry, and SEA #1 (22nd overall)
  • January 11, 2009 Trade – SF receives RB Reuben Droughns and IND #3 Supplemental Pick (“round 13”); IND receives SF #9
  • January 12, 2009 Trade – JAX receives FL 6-6-6 Torry Holt; ARI receives SS 5 Jermaine Phillips
  • January 14, 2009 Trade – BUF receives MLB 5-4 Keith Brooking; CAR receives BUF #2
  • January 15, 2009 Trade – ARI receives LDT 5-3 Cornelius Griffin and LE 5-3 Chris Kelsay; CLE receives ARI #4
  • January 17, 2009 Trade during the draft – NE receives ROLB 5-12 Shaun Phillips; CIN receives NE #1 (14th overall)
  • January 17, 2009 Trade during the draft – NE receives RLB 5-6 Donnie Edwards; BUF receives NE #2; Jay called for a vote on this trade and it was not disallowed on a 2-2 vote with Paul and Gary voting to allow while Jay and Ed voted to disallow (this vote was taken in the draft room and needed a quick 3-4 minute vote and Wayne was not in the room)
  • January 17, 2009 Trade during the draft – GB receives LE 0-9 Robert Mathis; CIN receives WR/LP Dennis Northcutt and GB #3
  • January 17, 2009 Trade during the draft – GB receives HB Dominic Rhodes; NYJ receives 2008 GB #4
  • January 17, 2009 Trade during the draft – CIN receives HOU #10; HOU receives 2008 CIN #8

  • February 3, 2009 – Aaron (amathewson@yahoo.com) has taken over team MIA

  • June 18, 2009 – Don (mington@aol.com) has taken over team CIN

Rule changes for the 2007 season which were discussed in the preseason (there were no dissenting views on these):  1) players rated at KR or PR may be cut (optionally) before the rookie/free-agent draft and for any of those players drafted in that draft the cutting team will obtain an additional draft pick at the end of that same round in the following season (to a highest of a 5th round pick) unless the player is drafted by the same team, for example if team AAA cuts LK/PR J.Smith and J.Smith is drafted by any other team in the 7th round of the immediately following draft then team AAA will get an additional pick at the end of round 7 in next season’s draft; 2) QBs must have 100+ attempts to play in SSFA except due to injury or blowout (this rule to be discussed would only go into effect beginning with the 2008 cards), 3) must fill PR and KR slots by the end of round 8, and 4) in the league championship game both teams will use the same quality of card good vs run and average vs pass (currently the home team uses good/good even in the championship game).

During any of the live drafts (the mandatory 1/19 and 1/26 drafts or any of the nightly optional drafts) each coach will have 1 minute to make their pick when it is their turn.

For those who want to draft live one evening check the top of this web page that evening at 6:30pm PST, if something comes up and I can’t draft at 7:00pm PST then I will post (no later than 6:30pm PST or perhaps earlier) an alternate later time for that evening’s draft such as 8:00pm PST or 10:00pm PST.  Draft time changes will be rare if they occur at all.

In the inaugural draft each team must draft:

1) both punt return slots (two PR’s or one LP) by the end of round 42;

2) a kicker by the end of round 43;

3) a punter by the end of round 44; and

4) both kick return slots (two KR’s or one LK) by the end of round 46.

In addition, no team may draft a second QB prior to round 4.  The inaugural draft will be 47 rounds; the following season rosters will expand to 53 (plus 3 on IR) as per the Constitution.

If by the end of the inaugural draft a team does not have all of its positional requirements fulfilled – see the middle of the league’s Constitution for details – such as having only two players rated at OT then the Commissioner will assign a bad player and have the coach cut a player to stay at a 47 man roster.

For the inaugural draft I have updated the Draft List with a comment for every player such as “started 16 games”, “12 games 3 starts”, “14 games 134/3.9” (for RB’s # carries and average per carry), etc.

The order of the inaugural draft was determined by the California Daily 3 Lottery http://www.calottery.com/Games/DailyThree/ in which each team received a number 000-999 based upon the schedule listed beforehand – teams with higher numbers will draft ahead of teams with lower numbers in odd-numbered rounds.  The order of each even-numbered round will be in reverse order of odd-numbered rounds.  Each coach chose a team name (the same as the name of an NFL team as per the Constitution) with lower number teams receiving priority.

Here are all of the rules and administration differences between the SOMIFA and the SSFA (these are all within the SSFA Constitution):

1) Inaugural season only:  QB's must have 100+ attempts in order to play (not including injuries and blowouts) instead of 50+

2) Inaugural season only:  Players listed with an O in the Draft List may not be drafted (this will prevent coaches from drafting these players for the purposes of playing only one year and then dropping out of the league)

3) Inaugural season only:  For players listed with an X (the few non-rated players available in the inaugural draft) each team may draft no more than 1 of these; the purpose of having these available in the inaugural draft is to avoid having a glut of excess talent available in next year's rookie/free-agent draft

4) (new 12/16) Inaugural season only:  no team may have two LP’s and one additional LP or PR – in other words, if a team already has one LP and one PR then they may not draft another player rated at LP (this is to avoid running out of PR’s and LP’s)

5) Inaugural season only:  Trading is not allowed

6) First year after the inaugural season only:  A lottery involving the 5 teams with the worst record will determine the #1 pick in the following rookie/free-agent draft (to be held in early 2009), each team will have an equal chance at the #1 spot but after that the seeding will be in reverse order of inaugural season finish

7) FS and SS may swap just as LCB/RCB with the same restrictions (e.g., can't swap a FS to SS and a SS to FS in the same season); in other words, you may announce before the season that a FS is becoming a SS or vice-versa

8) Punt returners who had fewer than 15 total attempts (including punt returns and fair catches) the previous season, who are designated by Strat as a #2 punt returner on the card, and who have a "card average" of 5.0 or more may never be used in SSFA as a #1 punt returner -- "card average" is determined by adding up all of the yardage (weighted by location on the card), with a TD counting as 75, and dividing by 36; this is to prevent a low usage PR with a very good card (often a low usage #2 PR's card is a combo from stats of other players) from being a dominant player way above their NFL value; two prime examples of this are 2003 DEN Rod Smith and 2004 BUF Johnathan Smith; there are no current 2006 season cards affected by this

9) 3-4 defenses must announce before the season their RILB and LILB (this is a very minor issue to also be implemented in SOMIFA)

10) Second half of the season teams use the good/good defensive card; first half of the season teams use the good/average defensive card (average pass defense)
