2017 Season League News:

2017 Season Rule Changes (discussed on the message board):  1) new CB3 rating applied by Strat to some players – for the 2017 season we will go with Strat’s explicit comment that these specific players will only be allowed to play the 1st DB position and not be allowed to play LCB or RCB except in case of an injury to a LCB or RCB; although there was much discussion there were ultimately no other proposals for now or the future; 2) overtime retained at 15 minutes despite NFL rules, no-one expressed an interest in reducing overtime to 10 minutes; 3) remove the roster requirement to have BBs who are rated 4+ as run blockers (since Strat creates many 0-rated BBs nowadays), there was no contrary sentiment expressed; 4) no change to injuries, single-game injuries during the regular season and no injuries in the playoffs, the vote was 16-6; 5) double-teaming with 3 defenders is no longer allowed within the defense’s 1-9 yard line, the vote was 9-8-5 (run-off 13-8 over no change); 6) fyi Strat somewhat reduced interceptions on the draft defensive cards, by 0.46% on short passes; 7) after discussion of a Draft Lottery to change how the draft order is determined, the vote was 11-7-1-1 to retain the current system of no lottery; 8) implement the new option provided by Strat to allow WRs to go for unlimited yardage on a reception while retaining the limit longest reception rule, the vote was 20-1 in favor (there was discussion about delaying implementation until the 2018 season but only 1 league member felt that it would be unfair to implement in 2017 due to biased voting so this is in effect for the upcoming 2017 season and beyond); 9) potentially disallowing removing any QB unless he is injured or another QB returns from injury for the second half, the vote was 18-1 to retain the current rule; 10) changing tie-breakers for draft position so that better head-to-head winning percentage and then better strength of schedule determines which team obtains the highest pick in odd-numbered rounds, there were no contrary opinions expressed.

2016 Season League News:

·         September 9, 2017 Trade – DAL receives 2017 SEA #7; SEA receives FL Julian Edelman

2016 Rule Changes (discussed on the message board):  1) potentially removing longest gain on reception and run rules – voted to retain longest gains 14-7-6 (where 7 was to remove both while 6 was to remove it only on receptions), 2) removing injuries – voted to retain injuries 21-9, 3) adjusting how 50-94 carry RB limits are handled – voted to retain rules as is 21-2, 4) using the good run defensive card – voted to retain average card as is 25-3, 5) disallowing 3 doubleteams on any one defensive play call – vote was a tie 14-14 so there will be no change, 6) touchbacks on kickoffs start at the 25 (NFL rule, there was no contrary opinion on this from the message board).  In addition:  a) do not allow SS to play FS = not on the table since that would make it too difficult to keep a team intact from season to season and it is not realistic since SS and FS are interchangeable for many NFL teams; b) remove the restriction of 4-3 teams to play a 3-4 defense = not on the table since that would be too powerful in some cases; c) remove the restriction on 3rd or 4th WR (not on the table unless there would be significantly more support for this).

2015 Season League News:

2015 Rule Changes (discussed on the message board):  1) penalties will be removed due to a message board vote, 2) single-game injuries will remain in the regular season but removed in the playoffs due to a message board vote, 3) before the start of the season each team must declare their starters at LCB, RCB, SS and FS; these declared starters are the only players who are allowed to play the position except in the event of injury; none of these declared starters may play 1st DB even in the event of injury, 4) removing the restriction on which WRs may play 3rd or 4th WR (this proposal was removed once the 1st DB issue was resolved).

2011 Rule Changes:  1) using the average run defensive card (instead of good) = change approved (vote 10 to 5); 2) further restrict use of nickel defense = same restrictions to nickel, modify the 4th quarter allowance to allow nickel in the last 5:00 of the quarter or else when the defensive team is ahead by 15 or more points (vote = 9 to 7 to 1); 3) further restrict use of low carry RBs (to go into effect in the 2012 card season), see 2012 Rule Changes; 4) restrict swapping of TEs in a 2 TE formation = "best" TE is never allowed to play TE2 where best is determined in the same way as WR1 and WR2 is determined (using completion combinations on all 3 pass types) (vote = 12 to 4 to 1); 5) disallow injuries to QBs in the playoffs or championship game = no change to rule (vote = 12 to 6); 6) modify when trading season goes into effect = almost no support for this so it was abandoned; 7) modify draft order to match NFL tie-breakers (no-one objected so this will go into effect in the 2012 card season, see final entry of http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures in which strength of schedule is the only tie-breaker).

2008 Season Draft

Rule discussions for the 2008 season (starting in 2009):  1) Currently teams draft in reverse order of regular season finish (with the championship game participants drafting last), we will discuss for teams making the playoffs drafting in reverse order of how far a team went into the playoffs to potentially be implemented in the 2009 season (starting in 2010) – this change was approved by an 8-2 vote on the forum; 2) currently during the draft a team must fill its PR and KR requirements by the end of round 8, this presents admin difficulties for the league so instead teams will be required to fill its PR and KR requirements by the end of the Supplemental Draft, if there is no player eligible to play the needed PR or KR position then the team must use a draft pick on “generic PR” or “generic KR” and the Commissioner will immediately after the Supplemental Draft assign a bad card to fill the slot for the current season – this was presented on the forum with more than a half dozen coaches expressing agreement and there was no disagreement; 3) possibly modifying the requirement for K and P for K to be drafted by the end of round 6 (instead of 5 as it is now) and P to be drafted by the end of round 7 or 8 (instead of 6 as it is now), this modification wouldn’t go into effect until the 2009 season cards (starting in 2010) – this proposal was approved with no dissenting views to have the K position filled by round 6 and P by round 8; 4) currently a 0-rated FB and a 4-rated HB may be positioned at BB, there is a proposal to disallow one or both of these – this was discussed on the forum but several coaches disagreed and there was not enough agreement with the proposal to put it to a vote; 5) next season let’s remove the 3 PR, 3 KR, 3 QB roster maximum until the 53-man cut date, currently it is not allowed to have more than 3 just before the draft but this will allow the draft to proceed more smoothly not having to worry about cutting anyone during the draft – this was presented on the forum with no disagreement; 6) currently a coach must announce before the first play from scrimmage whether a 50-99 carry RB is unlimited in the first half (and it defaults to the second half if there is no announcement), there is a proposal to require this announcement either ahead of time to be posted on the roster sheet or via e-mail with the other coach before kickoff – this was presented on the forum with no disagreement.

2007 Season Schedule     (posted 8/28/2008)

Rule changes for the 2007 season (starting in 2008):  1) A team choosing to use the 3-4 defensive card must announce before the season which side their MLB(s) will play LILB or RILB and may not swap unless due to injury, a team choosing to use the 4-3 defensive card must announce before the season which side their NT-only(s) will play LDT or RDT and may not swap unless due to injury, the purpose of this is to avoid swapping left/right at will during a game (unless due to injury), currently a player rated at RILB may not play LILB (unless announced before the season) but there is no such restriction on a MLB and this rule would close that loophole; 2) Remove the tie-breaker clause regarding record against #1 seed; 3) players rated at KR or PR may be cut (optionally) before the rookie/free-agent draft and for any of those players drafted in that draft the cutting team will obtain an additional draft pick at the end of that same round in the following season (to a highest of a 7th round pick) unless the player is drafted by the same team, for example if team AAA cuts LK/PR J.Smith and J.Smith is drafted by any other team in the 7th round of the immediately following draft then team AAA will get an additional pick at the end of round 7 in next season’s draft; 4) punt returners who had fewer than 15 total attempts (punt returns plus fair catches) and are designated by Strat as a #2 PR and have a 5.0 or greater yard average on the card (add up weighted yardage with TD counting as 75 and divide by 36) may not be used as a #1 PR (this affects only 1 player for 2007 and that player is un-owned); 5) use the good run / average pass defensive card (instead of just the good/good card) for the entire season (not including playoffs which are unchanged, the home team uses the good pass defensive card); 6) FS and SS may swap just as LCB/RCB with the same restrictions (e.g., can't swap a FS to SS and a SS to FS in the same season); in other words, you may announce before the season that a FS is becoming a SS or vice-versa – this also modifies the roster requirements so that 1 FS, 1 SS, and 1 S are required; 7) punters, kickers, punt returners and kick returners who are cut during a draft and then picked up later in the same draft provide compensation to the coach who made the cut with the compensation being an additional draft pick at the end of one round lower in the following season’s draft (to a maximum of a 6th round pick for a K or a 7th round pick for P, PR, or KR); 8) the championship game no longer has any home field advantage, both teams will now use the good run defensive card and the average pass defensive card; 9) beginning in the 2008 season (in year 2009) the QB limits will be modified so that under 100 NFL attempts (instead of under 50 as it is now) will not be able to play in a game except due to an injury or blowout.

SEASON 5 -- 2006 Season

Defending champion HOU made the playoffs with a 13-3 record but was the #3 seed as SF and SEA each had 15-1 records.  After defeating 9-7 TB 24-21, SEA lost to HOU 34-19 to give HOU another championship game appearance.  After defeating 9-7 CHI 41-0, SF lost to 11-5 DAL 21-19 as an 83% field goal attempt with 15 seconds to go was no good.  In the championship game HOU defeated DAL 35-20 to give HOU its second consecutive championship.

2006 Season League News:

Rule change for the 2006 season (finalized August 2007):  If a team is missing one PR or one KR then an 8th round pick (or earlier) must be used to fill the spot; if two spots are needed then a 7th and an 8th round (or earlier) pick must be used; etc. A coach may choose to take a carded player or be put into the "lottery" below just by announcing PR lottery or KR lottery. No player rated at PR or KR may be taken after round 8 unless there is no-one stuck in that lottery (for example, if there are any coaches in the PR lottery then no player rated at PR may be taken in the draft after the 8th round).  After the draft any PR and KR still not taken (which may be one or two or not even any) will be put into a pool along with enough of the very worst previous season PR and KR cards as needed so that every team will get what they need. Each PR or KR card added to a team will count towards the 53 roster max.  For example, if after round 8 there are two teams which each need one KR and one team which needs two KR then that's 4 KR's needed; if there's 1 KR remaining from the draft then that would mean the 3 worst previous season KR cards would be added into the KR lottery. Then I would determine randomly which team KR spot would be filled with which KR card.

2003 Season Expansion Lottery Draft Order Determination

We will use the Massachusetts Lottery http://www.masslottery.com/ and we will use the Mega Ball of the Big Game Mega Millions on Tuesday 8/24.  This is a number from 1-52 which will be listed for 8/24.

Late 8/20 evening I randomly assigned via dice roll to each of the 12 new league members a letter A-L.  Each letter will represent a range of numbers in this mega ball as follows:

Letter A = 1-4 = KC/Joe

Letter B = 5-8 = BAL/Bill

Letter C = 9-12 = SEA/Jeff

Letter D = 13-16 = NYJ/Jamie

Letter E = 17-20 = GB/Vinny

Letter F = 21-24 = WAS/Brian

Letter G = 25-28 = MIN/Bernie

Letter H = 29-32 = JAX/Brian

Letter I = 33-36 = NE/Mike

Letter J = 37-40 = TEN/John

Letter K = 41-44 = NO/Tom

Letter L = 45-48 = PHI/Jamie

If the Mega Ball number for that day is within one of these ranges then the person with that letter gets the first pick in odd numbered rounds of the expansion draft.  If the mega ball bonus is not within one of these ranges (i.e. it's 49-52) then we will instead use the Mass Millions Bonus Number from 8/23 and we will not at all use the Mega Ball Bonus Number whatsoever.

The person with the letter which contains a number closest to the Mega Ball Number will receive the second pick of odd numbered rounds of the expansion draft.  The third pick will be determined by the letter containing a number second-closest to the Mega Ball Number, and so on.

The letters A and L will roll over to each other in each direction so that, for example, if the Mega Ball Number is 2 then A gets the first pick, L gets the second pick, B gets the third pick, K gets the fourth pick, and so on.  In this way those who get more "extreme" letters such as A, B, K, and L will not be at a disadvantage and there will be no letters with any advantage.

Here are further examples:

* Mega Ball Number = 47 means odd numbered rounds of the expansion draft = LAKBJCIDHEGF

* Mega Ball Number = 22 means odd numbered rounds of the expansion draft = FEGDHCIBJAKL

* Mega Ball Number = 50 means we don't use it at all and we use the 8/23 Mass Millions Bonus Number instead; Mass Millions Bonus Number = 35 means odd numbered rounds of the expansion draft = IJHKGLFAEBDC

Even numbered rounds of the rookie/free-agent draft will proceed with the same order (for new league members who will all draft approximately in the middle of each round) as odd numbered rounds of the expansion draft.  Even numbered rounds of the expansion draft and odd numbered rounds of the rookie/free-agent draft will proceed in reverse order of odd numbered rounds of the expansion draft.

In other words, the expansion draft is serpentine as is the rookie/free-agent draft.  The person getting the last pick in the first round of the expansion draft will get the first pick of the second round as well as the highest pick (of expansion teams) in the first round of the rookie/free-agent draft.

If someone decides not to participate in the draft after all then his draft spot will be given to the next person joining the league.  If there is a spot open by the time of the draft then an un-owned team will draft for that team and will draft at the end of each expansion draft round.

If there are two or more spots open when someone new wants to join then that person(s) will be given one of these open draft order spots at random.  For example, if the person with letters B, E, and J drop out before the draft and I'm able to find two others to take their place then those two others will take two of B, E, and J while the third spot will be drafted by an un-owned team at the bottom of each round.

Result:  The mega ball was a 46 which meant LKAJBICHDGEF which means 1) PHI/Jamie, 2) NO/Tom, 3) KC/Joe, 4) TEN/John, 5) BAL/Bill, 6) NE/Mike, 7) SEA/Jeff, 8) JAX/Brian, 9) NYJ/Jamie, 10) MIN/Bernie, 11) GB/Vinny, 12) WAS/Brian

SEASON 1 -- 2002 Season

Our inaugural season was great as we did not have one of the four game result deadlines pass with any games outstanding.  Great job everyone!

The New York Giants led by QB Chad Pennington’s 67% completion percentage and RB Tiki Barber’s 1410 rushing yards led the league with a 13-3 record and defeated 10-6 Chicago to make it to the championship game.  Pittsburgh with Brett Favre at QB and Garrison Hearst at RB after an 11-5 regular season defeated 12-4 Dallas in the semi-final game.  PIT won the championship game over NYG 27-24.

10/3/2003 Trade:  SD trades RB/KR N.Davenport to DAL for WR J.Jurevicius.  Standard procedure in year one is to vote on whether the trade should be allowed as outlined in the Constitution.  Ed, Rick, and Paul voted to allow this trade while Wayne voted to disallow the trade (with all other league members not casting a vote).  The trade went into effect after game 4.

The following Draft List spreadsheet contains a list of every single player rated or given a card by Strat in the 2002 season.  Each player’s rating and card info is indicated as is each player’s 2003 NFL status (such as DENstarterLG, information as of 8/27/2003), age, and ratings from last year.

The following is a brief history of my Strat-O-Matic experiences which may help you see that this league is in for the long term.  I was born in 1963 and began playing Strat baseball in about 1980.  I was in a Strat baseball league from about 1981 through 1991.

I began playing Strat football in 1986 and joined a league almost immediately.  This league was and still is a draft keeper league called Oops and the league is now in something like its 35th season.  In 1996 I left the area of the league and had to reluctantly leave the league (I stayed in the league an extra full season by flying to the league’s area and playing a bunch of games over three weekends but that was way too tiring).  If you’re in the Southern California area I recommend checking out the Oops league.

I began playing Strat basketball (board game) I think in the late 80’s and played season replays on the computer game in the early 90’s.  In approximately 1995 I joined a start-up league and helped shape some of the initial rules and then when the next year the Commissioner left the league I took over as commissioner.  Near 2010 or so my interest in basketball diminished and I handed the league over to another commissioner, and the league web page at http://www.somiba.com now redirects to the league’s new web page.
